“A Legacy of Courage, Compassion, and Mission”

Society of St. Ursula, India

Shanti Ashram, Vadgaon Sheri,

PUNE, INDIA

With deep joy and heartfelt gratitude, I warmly welcome you to the official website of the Society of St. Ursula of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This new digital space is more than a platform of information; it is a doorway into our rich heritage, our living spirituality, and our ongoing mission entrusted to us by God.

Our Society was founded in 1606 in Dole, France, by our visionary Foundress, Venerable Anne de Xainctonge — a woman of profound faith, courage, and apostolic zeal. Deeply rooted in devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and Mother Mary, Anne dared to dream beyond the boundaries of her time. Her heart was deeply moved by the suffering of girls and women who were denied dignity and access to education in the 17th century.

Inspired by the Jesuits who educated boys, Anne courageously envisioned a similar apostolic mission for girls—a vision that was both radical and prophetic. Despite opposition from her own family and the dangers of entering what was considered hostile territory, she remained steadfast, trusting fully in God’s plan. Her perseverance laid the foundation for a Society marked by compassion, courage, and unwavering commitment, especially toward the poor and marginalized.

The flame ignited in 1606 soon crossed borders. In 1661, our sisters were invited to Brig, Switzerland, marking our first mission beyond France. This missionary spirit continued to unfold across continents—reaching South Africa in 1934 and India in 1953. Today, in India, our mission has blossomed into 28 vibrant communities, engaged in education, healthcare, social and medical outreach, pastoral ministry, and the empowerment of women and children

As we launch this website, we hope it serves as a living window into who we are—our journey, our values, and our service. May it inspire many hearts, especially young women, to listen attentively to God’s call and to courageously join hands with us in continuing this mission of hope and transformation.

May Venerable Anne de Xainctonge continue to intercede for us, and may Christ in the Eucharist remain our constant source of strength, love, and renewal.

With prayerful wishes and blessings,

Sr. Marina Thomas
